Thursday Throwdown

Welcome back to the Thursday Throwdown, folks. We know you missed us yesterday when we skipped our Top Five for the first time since August, but with no movement and only our top three still standing, we figured it's time to focus on what we've got before us - two great matchups that will decide regional championships and state semifinal spots. Today we'll take a closer look at Potomac Falls-Broad Run II by breaking down the matchups at the quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive positions. This might look pretty familiar to those of you who read us regularly since we essentially did the exact same thing before the first matchup on October 24. Well, it's a new day and we expect a different type of game Friday night - and Panther fans are certainly hoping for a different result than the 38-0 rout they witnessed in Week 9. Tenorio and I will alternate teams with each position and as always, we're just debating for the sake of argument. Let us know what you think in the polls below each matchup and the comments section below. I'll be front and center for this game tomorrow night and I'm looking forward to a good one. Top Performers - Regular Season Recap

With the regular season complete and our season-long competition finished, today on Top Performers we look back at the best individual performances from the regular season that was. As we did all season, we'll select a quarterback, a running back, a wide receiver, a place kicker, a defense, an offensive line and a playmaker. Since some of these were very close calls, we'll also include runners-up in each category. Inevitably, we had to overlook several great games in the process, but if there's a particular performance you adamantly feel deserved to be included, let us know in the comments section below. Remember, these are just individual game performances. Our Loudoun All-Extra teams will be unveiled at the conclusion of the season. Now let's get to the good stuff... Read more of this post »

Welcome back to the Monday (Afternoon) Quarterback. After a busy first weekend in the regional playoffs, two teams are out and three teams moved on, with two of those squads - Potomac Falls and Broad Run - set to do battle again this Friday night in Ashburn. Today we'll take one final look at the two teams whose seasons came to an end, Briar Woods and Loudoun County and hit on a few of our observations from Broad Run and Potomac Falls' wins on Friday night as we look ahead to their rematch. So let's get right to it... Read more of this post »

Top Five Football Power Poll - (Playoffs!)

Welcome back to the Top Five Football Power Poll for our final regular-season installment. With Loudoun County's big win at Heritage on Friday, they secured a spot in the playoffs and the fifth spot in our rankings. All five teams are postseason-bound with No. 1 Stone Bridge moving on to the second round of the AAA Northern Region playoffs with its rout of Jefferson. This week, the Bulldogs take on Tenorio's mighty Majors, who just squeaked by my beloved Washington-Lee Generals. Expect another beatdown in Ashburn. (But not as bad a beat-down as would have been administered to the Generals. - PT) With the second season upon us, today we'll take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of each team to highlight what they need to exploit and what they need to improve in order to make their playoff run last into December. Thursday Throwdown

Welcome back to the Thursday Throwdown, where Brooks and I battle things out about a number of different issues or questions pertaining to Loudoun County football. Today, we'll use tomorrow's Rivalry Week games as the theme to the Throwdown. What's the Best Rivalry? The Best Atmosphere? The Best Chance for an Upset? And then, Brooks and I get personal, as our two almae matres (check out that Latin)/alma maters -- Washington-Lee and Mount Vernon -- meet in the Northern Region playoffs...let's get this thing going. Heritage's Driskill to Step Down

Late Wednesday afternoon Heritage football coach Wes Driskill announced he will step down at the end of the season, Gameday Magazine reported. LoudounExtra.com confirmed this with Heritage Athletic Director Ron Petrella Thursday morning. Petrella said Driskill's reasons for stepping down are primarily family related. Driskill currently has one son running cross country and another playing football for Stone Bridge, and a daughter currently in college. And he expressed his desire to spend more time with them. Top Five Football Power Poll - Week 11

This week is rivalry week in the league with a possible final playoff seed on the line and pride ripe for the picking. The Battle for the Burg could land a fourth team a spot, while Broad Run and Park View renew a rivalry that the two teams split a year ago. The Panthers look to complete the Sterling two-step at Dominion and Briar Woods and Freedom tangle in the Bird Bowl. All these made-up game names, overflowing with alliteration, have got us feeling all lyrical and English-majory. (One of us also worked 15 hours yesterday covering the election in Loudoun County, so we're not working on regular sleep here, people.) So today, for your reading pleasure, we've thrown together haikus on each of our top teams. If you don't remember that high school poetry lesson, the format is based on syllables per line. The pattern is 5-7-5. Keep in mind, neither of us were English majors and there's a reason why we cover sports and don't have any poetry anthologies out...yet. Read more of this post »

How bout them Red Raiders? Today, with the Northern Region regular season complete and the final week of the schedule upon us for our other nine teams, we'll take a look at the playoff picture as it's shaping up. The power points system makes it a bit complicated, but let's first take a look at what we know and then breakdown each team that is currently in the playoffs and those that have a chance of extending their season with a win on Friday, and perhaps some help.
