Heritage's Driskill to Step Down

Matt Brooks at 11:20 a.m., November 6, 2008

Late Wednesday afternoon Gameday Magazine reported that Heritage football coach Wes Driskill had announced he will step down at the end of the season. LoudounExtra.com confirmed this with Heritage Athletic Director Ron Petrella Thursday morning.

Petrella said Driskill's reasons for stepping down are primarily family related. Driskill currently has one son running cross country and another playing football for Stone Bridge, and a daughter currently in college. And he expressed his desire to spend more time with them.

"I've got a lot of family things that I need to do," Driskill said when reached by phone. "I need more time to be a husband, a son and a father. ... It's not like I don't love coaching, I love it I've been doing it for 32 years, but I want to spend more time with my family."

Driskill said he informed the team on Wednesday of his intention to resign and made sure they understood his reasons for stepping down.

"I always told y'all to do the right thing, to do in your heart what you know is right and I’ve come to that decision," Driskill said he told the team.

Driskill, the coach who started the Pride's football program in 2003, compiled a career 29-30 record in Leesburg. Heritage's best seasons occurred in 2005 and 2007 when they finished with 7-3 marks. This season, the Pride fell short of preseason aspirations to win the Dulles District but still have a 6-3 record and with one game remaining on their schedule have an outside chance of making the playoffs. Their final regular season game is this Friday at Loudoun County, a team Driskill has defeated at least once in each of his five previous seasons.

"We can't thank Wes Driskill enough for everything he's done for our program here at Heritage," Petrella said. "His legacy will certainly continue with our coaches and our players. He's taught them the right things to do."
