Local Republicans Proud of Campaign

When I arrived at the Loudoun County Republican Committee’s post-election party at The Dock at Lansdowne earlier this evening, the campaign optimism was high.

But by 10 p.m. many LCRC members were leaving to join the Wolf celebration party over at the Holiday Inn on Rt. 28.

Not that the Republicans didn’t have anything to celebrate, mind you.

The meals tax initiative was voted down by a whopping 70-plus percent as of this writing.

Bill Brown of Leesburg was especially pleased that the the Happy Meals Tax - as some had called it - failed.

“People have had it up to here with taxes,” he said. “And people on both sides feel it - Democrats, too.”

The LCRC was also proud of the campaign they’d run in Loudoun.

Glen Caroline, the LCRC chairman who has been credited with uniting the county’s GOP members after a contentious Nov. 2007 local election, was especially pleased.

Tag Greason, LCRC Chair of Precinct Operations tracks each precinct’s voter turnout.

“During this campaign we’ve had the best and largest corps of volunteers since 2001--when I first became an LCRC member,” he said, adding, “We’re looking forward to keeping up this volunteer momentum starting tomorrow.”

In fact, Eve Barner, 27, an LCRC member for the past nine years, was already preparing for the next campaign. She was circulating a petition at the party, collecting signatures to get next year’s Republican candidates on the ballot.

Many Republicans I spoke with felt that the Obama campaign was just too much of a force to reckon with this go-around—the campaign opened several offices in the county and recruited an intense army of campaigners.

“It didn’t help matters that the McCain campaign didn’t open up an office in Loudoun until a few months ago,” said Ken Reid, Leesburg Town Councilman.

How bout them results ohthehumanity et, al?? Looks like you guys not only underestimated the traction of the Democratic message but also the anger within the electorate with the horrible mess the republicans created. The election results are a clear message that the republican platform and way of doing things is NO LONGER VIABLE. My advice would be to get over it and work as Americans to fix this mess. The future looks much brighter this morning!!!!

Oh and by the way Erica - Loudoun went BLUE - why no comments on the celebrations for the victorious party?? This may give some insight as to why so many of my comments (that were not nearly as personal and childish as those attacking me) during the last several days were deleted. Better get with it or is this strictly a RED blog and of NO SIGNIFICANCE?

Next step is to focus on getting rid of local politicians who want to bring this bitter partisanship down to the local government level where it will only serve to divide rather than produce productive results.

Too bad you didn't make it out to Ned Devine's, Erica. I will never forget 11 pm last night. I finally left around 1 am.

Thank god the meal tax failed. The bonds that did pass will help to Bankrupt the county. Congrats to the winners of the general election. I trust you think the future is bright? Its not!

The future is certainly brighter than it was on Nov 3rd!

We own a house and two cars are delighted to have the privilege to pay our fair share of property (and other) taxes that make this such a safe, clean, beautiful, and educationally superior county. The future is indeed bright!!

"I like to pay taxes," said Oliver Wendell Holmes. "With them I buy civilization." (Holmes was a Supreme Court Justice nominated by Theodore Roosevelt.)

Rhumb - "bitter partisanship" seems to be something you and some others here are very comfortable with with based on your posting history. Oh, and you are not even a politician.
I cannot stand people who are so one party dimensional. There are good politicians on both sides but with your partisan hatred, I guess you would fail to see that.

Not really sure what you are trying to say t8erman. You should notice I did not specify either party when making the statement that partisanship, red or blue, is counter productive in local politics. Look at the last board of supervisors who were recently voted out - their agenda was consistent with the national party they identified with and look where it got them. Not very productive at all in terms of representing the citizens of Loudoun County. They could have been super libs on the other side of the political spectrum and the net result to the citizens, in my opinion, would have been just as non-productive. Oh and by the way what do you know about who and who is not a politician and what difference does it make?

Funny how Obama won on the traditonal Republican message of cutting taxes and creating jobs...by pitting workers against employers...will be an interesting 4 years...
